NFU discusses strong Farm Bill, RFS, fake meat labels
A strong farm bill, support for the renewable fuels industry and labels for fake meat are among the policy priorities of National Farmers Union members.
Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish tells Brownfield Ag News at the 116th National Farmers Union convention, more money is needed in the Farm Bill for safety net programs because of the huge struggle farmers are going through in the down farm economy. And, Wertish says his group is VERY concerned about any potential weakening of the Renewable Fuels Standard to appease ‘big oil,’ “We’re concerned that the administration might be bowing down to them a little bit to make some changes which will be detrimental to the RFS and to rural America.”
South Dakota Farmers Union member Tammy Basel, a livestock producer in western South Dakota, is proposing policy for mandatory labeling of fake meat, “It’s very important to me that this lab-cultured meat will not be labeled as meat. It has to be labeled as something else because cultured meat is not from a sheep or cattle that comes from MY farm.” State delegates of National Farmers Union finalize their policies this afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri.
