NFU seeing trends in state policy discussions
The president of National Farmers Union (NFU) says he’s seeing several trends as members in each state prioritize policy initiatives.
Rob Larew says their members see ensuring a fair and diverse marketplace is vital to agriculture.
“Making sure that we are increasing opportunity to sell into more direct and local markets but also making sure that those existing markets continue to be strong and reliable,” he says.
He tells Brownfield there’s also concern about the viability of rural communities.
“Not only are we wanting to keep farmers on the farm,” he says, “but making sure that those communities in rural America have access to strong and affordable health care, that we keep our clinics in those rural communities.”
Larew says other member concerns include property rights, farmland access, affordable childcare, and increased environmental stewardship.
He says each state organization will bring its policy priorities to NFU’s 123rd convention March 9th – 11th in Oklahoma City. Follow along with Brownfield Ag News for coverage of the event.
