Nitrogen management a key to successful growing season

Proper nutrient management will be crucial to farmer success in 2023.

Andrew Luzum with Corteva Agriscience says fertilizer prices remain volatile.

“So the biggest thing is making sure that we’ve got equipment that’s ready to go and calibrated. The worst thing we can do is really overapply nitrogen (because) in today’s environment it’s really not cost conducive to the grower.”

He tells Brownfield the timing of application will also be important.

“If we’ve got anhydrous to get on this spring, making sure that we try to get it on plenty of time ahead of corn so that we don’t have injury to the crop.”

Luzum says up to 70 percent of nitrogen loss occurs below ground and N stabilizers can help prevent leaching and denitrificiation.
