North American agriculture coalition calls for USMCA renewal to ensure trade stability
More than 150 food and agriculture groups across North America are urging leaders to renew the USMCA.
National Potato Council’s Kam Quarles tells Brownfield, “In perspective of where we are 20, 30 years ago versus where we are today, on an economic basis, on a holistic basis, the agreement has delivered substantial results for not just agriculture, but the countries as well.”
He says disagreements should be settled through dispute mechanisms rather than upending the review process.
“As folks may want to address some of those competitive issues, there’s the potential for dragging other commodities into retaliation and subsequent kind of tit-for-tat type of actions between the countries that may end up increasing some of the economic instability.”
Since USMCA took effect in 2020, three of the five formal dispute panels launched have involved agricultural trade issues.
The coalition says maintaining stability in North American trade is essential to avoid uncertainty and ripple effects across the broader economy.
