Northey says farm bill programs will take time to implement

A USDA undersecretary says many parts of the 2018 Farm Bill will take months to implement.

Bill Northey says farmers will be able to sign up for some new or modified farm bill programs in a couple of months. “ARC-PLC will be later. We’ll sign up CRP probably late, maybe even into December of this next year.”

Bill Northey tells Brownfield making the many parts of new farm bill work, such as changes to ARC, PLC, and dairy will take time. “When you look across all of those, some of those are more complicated than others.”

Sign up for the Dairy Margin Coverage program is expected in June with payouts in July, and Northey says in about a month, producers that were in the LGM Dairy program last year that couldn’t participate in the 2018 Margin Protection Program will be able to go back and pick up that protection benefit. “Congress saw fit to be able to allow these producers to go back, and they will know exactly how much coverage they’re able to qualify for and what those payments are.
