Northwest Indiana dairy farm using anaerobic digesters to produce renewable energy

A northwest Indiana dairy farmer says anaerobic digesters are helping improve sustainability and energy efficiency throughout his operation. 

Carl Ramsey with Curtis Creek Dairy says the technology converts waste into methane gas. 

“We can use it to operate our boilers, which helps warm up the manure in the digester,” he says. “We run our generators. We also take it and turn it into renewable natural gas to put it into the pipeline.”

He tells Brownfield using new nutrient management technologies has allowed the farm to reduce its carbon footprint.

“That has helped us complete us complete a sustainability circle,” he says. “The sustainability programs we have implemented continue to highlight how farmers can responsibly feed the world.”

Ramsey says each digester creates thousands of cubic feet of natural gas to help support public energy demand. 

Curtis Creek Dairy is part of Fair Oaks Farms located in Newton County.
