Northwest Iowa farmer says soil crusting impacted soybean emergence

Northwest Iowa farmer Jolene Riessen says wet conditions impacted soybean emergence.

“Corn came up really well. Beans, we fought some crust. And I like to shoot for 150,000 seeds out there, so doing stand counts my weakest field was 128,000. So I’m glad I put out the extra seed.”

She tells Brownfield corn is really taking off.

“It’s in the 5-leaf stage, so we just finished up doing some spraying and now we’ll switch over and start spraying some beans to get those weeds under control. Because wow, when it rains it not only grows crops, it grows weeds. So just always something.”

Riessen farms near Ida Grove and is the current president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.
