NPPC board director concerned about Prop 12, tariffs, and disease threats
A newly elected board member of the National Pork Producers Council says Congress needs to provide a solution for Proposition 12.
John Anderson, a pork producer from Belgrade in central Minnesota, points out the House farm bill includes language that addresses California’s livestock confinement law.
“Of course we want to get that new farm bill passed and getting a fix for Prop 12 with California and some other states looking to possibly enact something like that so you have different requirements for different states, which makes it really tough for pork producers.”
He tells Brownfield trade is another key issue.
“You don’t know for sure with these tariffs, or retaliatory tariffs is what we would be concerned about, would be coming from. We export 30 percent of our pork, and 40 percent of that goes to Mexico. So we’re definitely keeping an eye on that.”
And Anderson says foreign animal disease detection and prevention remains a priority for NPPC.
