NPPC disappointed Prop 12 fix isn’t part of Continuing Resolution
The National Pork Producers Council is disappointed Congress is not including a federal solution for Proposition 12 in its Continuing Resolution.
NPPC president Lori Stevermer says the California animal housing law has created a lot of uncertainty.
“This is something that’s been on our producers’ minds heavily for the last couple years, so to see this come down to the wire and to not have that in there is disappointing.”
She tells Brownfield NPPC will continue pushing for a fix in the next farm bill to prevent a patchwork of state regulations.
“We have California’s Prop 12, we have Massachusetts’ Question 3, the concern has been what if another state puts some time of regulation in? So it’s that uncertainty that has really been first and foremost in our producers’ minds.”
The Minnesota pig farmer says Prop 12 has increased operating costs for pork producers, created future business uncertainty, and raised consumer prices.
