OBBBA would impact farm bill
A member of the House Agriculture Committee says passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act would likely hamper a new farm bill.
“Are we even going to have a farm bill anymore?”
Illinois Democratic Representative Eric Sorensen says the legislation proposes billions of dollars in cuts to the SNAP program, which is traditionally the largest piece of a farm bill.
“And so now, by taking this value out of the farm bill, I am growing less confident that we’re going to be able to pass a bipartisan farm bill that is going to help agriculture,” he says.
He tells Brownfield the ag industry also stands to suffer from cuts to rural healthcare and increased energy costs.
“It cuts energy tax credits.” He says, “You better get ready because your energy bills are going to go up by up to 9% by this winter.”
Sorensen says, as of Wednesday afternoon, Republicans had paused all action on the bill in an attempt to garner votes and await the return of more members of the caucus to Washington.
