October is Pork Month

October is Pork Month and Minnesota Pork Producers Association president Daryl Timmerman tells Brownfield the industry has a lot to celebrate.

“It’s a great opportunity to think about folks in the barn, folks that are involved with kind of the community as far as raising pigs, getting them fed, getting them transported to the market. And ultimately getting harvested and through to the tables across the state and the broader country here.”

He tells Brownfield the pork industry is a significant contributor to Minnesota’s economy.

“There’s 31,000 people that are impacted by the pork industry, when you think about the nutritionists and the truck drivers and the veterinarians and the plumbers and electricians and bankers like myself and insurance accountants and all the folks in the packing plants. It’s just incredible the people that are impacted by the pig.”

Timmerman says U.S. pork producers also play a vital role globally with exports accounting for about 25 percent of production annually.
