October poultry production climbs 4% above last year

The USDA says domestic poultry production during October 2024 was 4.922 billion pounds. That was up 4% from October 2023 on a 4% rise for chicken to 4.416 billion pounds, which canceled out a 1% decline for turkey production to 493.928 million.

The chicken slaughter was 4% above a year ago at 871.023 million head, with the average live weight holding steady at 6.7 pounds per bird, while the turkey slaughter was 5% lower at 19.601 million pounds, which canceled out a 4% gain in the average live weight to 31.68 pounds.

For the year to date, U.S. poultry production is 44.394 billion pounds, slightly ahead of last year’s pace.

The USDA’s updated 2024 and 2025 poultry production projections are out December 10th.
