Ohio Beef Expo celebrates 25 years
The Ohio Beef Expo is celebrating 25 years at the Ohio State Fairgrounds this weekend.
For Jim Rentz of Coldwater, Ohio, the first Oho Beef Expo Chairman, he’s not all that surprised how the Beef Expo has grown over the years.
“Well, I think the fact that one, the trade show was very important, very diversified, but then the sales themselves, the kind of breeding that goes in to these cattle were being accepted not only from breeders and commercial people from this state, but surrounding state, it was a lot of things that made it all work,” said Rentz.

Henry Bergfeld of Summitville, Ohio was serving as President of the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association when the Ohio Beef Expo started in 1988. Bergfeld says that after a couple of visits to the Iowa Beef Expo, he came home with the belief an event like that could be held in Ohio, but he had no idea it would be as big as it is today, 25 years later.
“It really is the centerpiece for the beef industry in the state of Ohio,” Bergfeld said. “With all the events with the juniors, we didn’t have that in the beginning, that’s been a big asset, trying to get some of these things pulled together, it’s a big event for all of Ohio and I’m totally surprised at how big it has gotten.”
