Ohio Corn and Wheat backs DeWine’s proposed gas tax hike

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and the Ohio House reached a deal to increase the gas tax by 11 cents and diesel tax by 20 cents a gallon to fix deteriorating roads and bridges.

DeWine, who had originally sought an 18-cents per gallon increase, says he hopes the Senate will also agree to the deal.

The Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association recently voted to support the governor’s proposal, which is estimated to generate an additional $1.2 billion annual for road and bridge projects.

DeWine has said that’s the bare minimum the state can spend to maintain the state’s transportation infrastructure.

Ohio Corn and Wheat President Jon Miller says the money the state currently receives from the fuel user fee isn’t enough to keep the roadways in good condition. He says the group urges the Ohio General Assembly to consider the proposal as it reviews the budget plan.

The Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association works in Washington D.C. and at the Ohio Statehouse to advocate for farmers and legislation that will help advance the profitability of Ohio grains.
