Ohio Corn and Wheat says USMCA is essential for U.S. wheat demand

The director of market development for Ohio Corn and Wheat says the renewal of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement remains critical for U.S. wheat demand.

Wendy Osborn says more than 7 percent of the U.S. wheat crop is exported to Mexico.

“Wheat is the largest crop grown worldwide and also the largest crop consumed worldwide,” she says. “When we look at how we market our wheat with Mexico as our largest buyer, that’s going to be really key and important in making sure that continues to stay in place.”

She tells Brownfield while domestic demand remains relatively flat, keeping the agreement intact could support the future of the U.S. wheat industry.

“Agriculture continues to be at the forefront of these discussions,” she says. “There’s been a lot of conversations around improving the economics of wheat, so we’re really looking at making sure that we continue to build relationships with our counterparts to keep those relationships strong.”

The US, Mexico, and Canada are expected to meet starting tomorrow to begin joint negotiations.
