Ohio crop development starting to rebound

A north central Ohio farmer says her crop is improving after a rough start to the growing season.

Patty Mann says several corn fields are nearing pollination.

“It’s just starting to tassel now and it’s looking pretty good. The later corn isn’t quite to that growth stage yet, but the stands are good. It’s nice and green. We could use a really good rain right now.”

The USDA says Ohio corn is 8 percent silking and rated 57 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 96 percent emerged, 16 percent blooming, and rated 54 percent good to excellent.

She tells Brownfield the crop needs rain.

“We’re expecting a total of a half an inch from now through Friday,” she says. “I was hoping for a bit more than that and it could happen. We have at least a 50% chance every day, so we’ll cross our fingers and hope for a bit more.”

Winter wheat is 48 percent harvested and 63 percent good to excellent.
