Ohio farmer concerned about tighter margins in 2025

A northwest Ohio farmer says the ag economy has impacted his farm plans for this year.

Justin Gravatt is a grain farmer in Union County.

“Just trying to put the fertilizer where it’s needed,” he says. “We’re doing a lot more variable rate this year. Trying to save maybe a pass or two and trying to do a better job on marketing. Not necessarily trying to hold out for the highest price, but sell where we know we can make money.”

He tells Brownfield he’s worried about narrow farm margins.

“With lower grain prices and our yields being down last year due to the drought, everything just keeps up,” he says. “There’s less money coming in and we’re just trying to find any way we can to save a little without hurting production.”

Gravatt says he saw lower yields due to last year’s drought, but he’s optimistic for a more profitable crop this year.

Brownfield interviewed Gravatt during Ohio Farm Bureau’s Annual Ag Day at the Capital.
