Ohio farmer monitoring crop quality after weeks of frequent rainfall

A northwest Ohio farmer says he’s concerned about the quality of the 2026 crop.

Justin Gravatt tells Brownfield, “We’ve been getting about an inch of timely rainfall every week this month,” he says. “That’s what has been keeping the crops going for the most part.”

According to the latest USDA crop progress and conditions report, Ohio corn is 87 percent in the dough stage, 36 percent dented, and rated 61 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are 93 percent setting pods and rated 58 percent good to excellent.

He says excess moisture could impact harvest timing.

“The beans look really good,” he says. “The corn just looks okay. I hope everything stays standing. I’m a little worried about lodging if we keep getting water.”

Oats are 83 percent harvested and rated 84 percent good to excellent.

Gravatt raises corn, soybeans, and wheat in Union County.

The National Weather Service says parts northwest Ohio have received 7 to 8 inches of rain since August 11th.
