Ohio farmer optimistic about winter precipitation helping drought conditions

A central Ohio farmer says recent winter precipitation has helped mitigate drought conditions across the state.

But, Nick Wolford tells Brownfield he’s still concerned about the long-term impacts.

“We’ve been pretty fortunate with the winner precipitation,” he says. “We’ve gotten to the point now where the tiles have started to run again, so that’s encouraging. I don’t think that soil moisture is completely recharged, but we’re on our way there.”

He says he’s cautiously optimistic about the 2025 season.

“We’ve had a couple drier years, this obviously being the worst,” he says. “I just hope that we’re done with that streak and can get some better weather.”

Wolford says after a tough couple of years, his winter wheat crop is looking better than expected.

He raises corn, soybeans, and wheat in Pickaway County.
