Ohio farmer says harvest has been slow and steady
Harvest has been slow going for northern Ohio farmer Steve Reinhard.
He tells Brownfield they’re trying to take advantage of decent weather this week to put a bigger dent in the harvest. “So far, yields have been good for both crops,” he says. “Our soybean yields have been running really kind of surprisingly good. I know we’ve had some fields that we thought would be on the upper end of what we usually have for a farm average, but they’ve actually exceeded that expectation.”
Reinhard says there have been some reports of vomitoxin in corn, but overall, the quality has been pretty good. “We did spray a lot of fungicide on the corn this year,” he says. “It seems to be keeping it a little bit wetter for this time of year. But the yields have been coming in pretty good. So we’ll be able to pay for that extra drying charge.”
He says like other farmers in Ohio, the crop seems to be somewhat delayed because of cloud cover and smoke from the Canadian wildfires during the summer growing season.
