Ohio pork producer: Prop 12 fix needs to be in the next farm bill

A north central Ohio pork producer says a federal fix for Proposition 12 needs to be included in the next farm bill.

Pat Hord says the law creates additional challenges for farmers already facing regulatory difficulties.

“We want to preemptively help lower that for our farmers,” he says. “There’s also other priorities in the farm bill that we would definitely like and we’re definitely advocating for to protect the US swine herd.”

He tells Brownfield his biggest concern is that Prop 12 sets a precedent for how other states could influence ag policy.

“We’re not the only industry that has this where you have another state that’s set a standard and then the rest of the country has to comply with it,” he says. “In our case, they weren’t science based. They were just arbitrarily picked, so it’s tough for us to say that’s okay.”

Hord says budget reconciliation could also an opportunity for Congress to discuss steps to resolve the issue.
