Ohio State Extension launches statewide forage quality initiative

Ohio State University Extension has launched a statewide effort to help livestock producers better understand feeding challenges heading into the winter months.

Ted Wiseman, with Perry County Extension, says variable conditions throughout the growing season have led to inconsistent forage quality levels.

“Out of 180 samples, about two-thirds of them have the energy for cows about three months before they calve,” he says. “That doesn’t include what their body condition score is or if you need to bump them up a little bit due to snow, ice, and mud in the winter.”

He tells Brownfield understanding the nutritional value of forage is crucial heading into winter feeding season.

“Most extension offices have a forage probe that producers can borrow to pull that sample,” he says. “We also have materials online that show you how to take an accurate sample and how to send it into an accredited lab.”

Wiseman says producers should work with their local veterinarian and nutritionist to build a nutrition plan that helps meet the needs of their livestock.
