Ohio winter wheat could face yield reductions due to delayed emergence

A small grains agronomist at Ohio State University says drought conditions impacted winter wheat emergence across the state.

Laura Lindsey tells Brownfield, Things were planted timely,  but it unfortunately didn’t come up in a timely manner. There will likely be a yield penalty just because of the delayed germination and emergence.”

She says research shows planting date can impact yield.

“We’ve measured fairly limited yield reductions when we’re four weeks past the fly free date,” she says. “Going into the first week of November, we do see yield penalties. That average is about a 15 percent yield reduction.”

Lindsey says farmers should continue to scout their fields this winter.
