Optimism for a good wheat crop

A northwest Kansas wheat grower says there is some optimism for a good harvest.

Kansas Association of Wheat Growers President Chris Tanner tells Brownfield the crop went into dormancy looking good.

“We do have good stands, but Kansas is a large state with a lot of different climate regions. Where I’m at, we have a pretty nice potential for a good crop this year,” he says.

Tanner says the state received some snowfall this week.

“This is the first real precipitation I’ve had all winter long, but we had some nice fall moisture that had the pretty good profile of moisture in the soil,” he says.

He says snow cover from early-January winter storms has protected at least some of the crop from winterkill.
