The senior policy director at the Ohio Soybean Association says expanding market opportunities for the state’s soybean farmers is a top priority in 2025.

Brandon Kern says the biofuels and renewable energy sector presents opportunities to help grow demand for soybeans.

“The new 45Z tax credit guidance finally came out,” he says. “There are a lot of improvements that we’d like to see to help create a fair, more balanced approach for how fuels produced with crop based feedstocks like soybeans are treated. Right now, soybean oil kind of gets penalized.”

He tells Brownfield fuel producers need a long term solution.

“The 45Z tax credit is just a a three-year window,” he says. “Soybean products, soybean oil, and biofuels is a big part of that.”

Kern says the tax credit provides certainty to biofuels producers and farmers but extending it beyond the three year mark is critical for continued growth.
