Over-the-top dicamba still uncertain in 2025
The president of the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association says much uncertainty remains around the availability of over-the-top dicamba products in 2025.
“That’s the $64,000 question.”
Kevin Johnson tells Brownfield the applications from the chemical manufacturers are in the hands of the EPA.
“Once they submit that, the EPA has 17 months.” He says, “If EPA takes all 17 months, we’re already into the ‘25 growing season and that’s probably gone.”
He says the industry is receiving mixed signals, so farmers need to plan accordingly.
“I think guys will still be able to use dicamba for a pre, but for post application I think we’re still 50/50 if that’s going to get approved,” he says.
Johnson says supplies of alternative chemistries, like glufosinate, are adequate, so growers should have options.
Nick Fassler, director of technical service – US agricultural solutions with BASF, says “Conventional dicamba can be used pre-plant with additional restrictions but not pre-emergence. Conventional dicamba labeled for soybean can only be used 14-28 days prior to planting and after receiving a minimum accumulation of 1″ of rainfall.”
