Patience may pay off for grain producers this summer

A grain market analyst says summer weather may offer farmers another pre-harvest pricing opportunity.  

Bree Baatz with Terrain says this year’s production estimates could be on track. “Are we going to have record yields? We don’t know yet, but as we sit here in mid-June, the speculation is these yield numbers are likely achievable because there is moisture in the forecast.”

She tells Brownfield farmers should have a flexible marketing strategy. “Hopefully, a lot of producers rewarded the price runup through May, but then as we go through the growing season, hopefully Mother Nature will give us another chance. Otherwise, we’ll go into harvest where the seasonal low will take place.”

She says there’s also some uncertainty around this month’s USDA acreage report and how those estimates will impact prices.
