Perdue cautiously optimistic about trade talk progress with China
The latest round of trade negotiations with China concluded on Thursday. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue says getting that agreement completed remains a priority.
“I think for our farmers and ranchers our top three issues are trade, trade, and trade,” he says.
The Secretary says they’re pleased with the progress of this week’s negotiations, but – he says they don’t want a deal just to say they have one. “We would love to see a comprehensive, major relationship deal with China restored,” he says. “We would love for them to be a reliable customer. We know that we can be a reliable supplier.”
China isn’t the only country they’re focusing on when it comes to trade deals. There’s Japan and the EU. But, Perdue says they’re still trying to flesh out those details. “The EU is another,” he says. “They say agriculture is not a part, we say no deal without agriculture.”
