Petition to DOJ against Bayer/Monsanto merger

A petition of more than one-million signatures asking the federal government to block the merger of Bayer and Monsanto his being delivered to the Department of Justice today.

The petitions were gathered by a dozen groups including the Center for Food Safety, Food and Water Watch, Organic Consumers Association, Sierra Club and Sum-of-Us.

The groups say the merger will hurt ag producers and consumers, “You know, this is our food system. Everybody eats. The Bayer/Monsanto is a bad deal for consumers and farmers and ranchers.”

Joe Maxwell is the head of the Organization for Competitive Markets. He tells Brownfield Ag News competition is the solution, not consolidation. Maxwell cites two studies outlined today at the National Press Club that show the harm the merger would do.
