Pillen says producer data ownership opens door to added income

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen says the nation’s first-ever data privacy law could help producers to monetize the value of their operational information.

He tells Brownfield the measure establishes producer ownership of production data, giving farmers and ranchers the authority to decide who can access it and under what terms. Pillen says that could create an additional revenue opportunity worth up to $250 an acre. “If I want to share it with an ag equipment manager, a seed corn company or a fertilizer company, if I want to do that, that’s my choice. I can give it away or I can sell it.”

Nebraska Corn Growers Association President Michael Dibbern says the law is an important step in supporting producers as they adopt new technology.

Pillen says he’s optimistic other states will use Nebraska’s law as a template to create similar legislation.
