Pioneer field agronomist concerned about effects of drought

Agronomists are concerned about the long term impacts of Ohio’s statewide drought.

Pioneer field agronomist Troy Putnam says drought conditions have expanded.

“I think it’s interesting to watch some of the the numbers start to come in. We are just now getting started,” he says. “We’ve had some very, very big concerns here early about soybean shattering in the field. It’s very unusual to have high temperatures with above average winds and no humidity.”

He tells Brownfield farmers are concerned about the long-term impacts of the lack of soil moisture.

“We’ve got some wheat to plant,” he says. “There’s no moisture at any reasonable depth at this point in time, so we’ll probably go ahead and plant wheat with the idea that we’ll get some moisture back in on top of.”

When it comes to making plans for 2025, Putnam says growers should focus on strong agronomic decisions.
