Plan for postemergence herbicide failures
Farmers are encouraged to prepare for postemergence herbicide failures.
Andy Carriger with Corteva Agriscience tells Brownfield some of the reasons a product fails are within a growers’ control, but some are not.
“A few examples within your control might include the selection of the herbicides, if you use the wrong chemistries for the wrong weeds that is a recipe for failure.”
He says incorrect rates and application timing can also lead to weed escapes.
“You should start scouting your fields regularly about a week or ten days after your first post-emergent application. You need to look for your signs of injury on the weeds and see if there are any signs of regrowth on those particular weeds.”
Carriger says if a second postemergence herbicide application is necessary, consider the duration between spraying, crop growth stage, and weed height.
