Planning for early planted soybeans in 2025
A crop protection specialist with Valent says management practices are key to finding success with early planted soybeans.
Eric Ott says the earlier a soybean goes in the ground, the more challenges it faces.
“When planting earlier, we’re dealing with some more insect pests like seed corn maggot, as well as wire worm and grubs as well as bean leaf beetle.” He says, “We’re also dealing with soil conditions that are more conducive for diseases such as fusarium, rhizoctonia, pythium species, as well as phytophthora.”
He tells Brownfield that means early season protection is vital.
“To maximize yield potential is to plant earlier and earlier.” He says, “That means needing a strong seed treatment to protect that seed.”
Ott says other keys to early soybean planting success are planting in proper soil conditions and protecting against soybean cyst nematodes.
