Planting “a few days out” for eastern Iowa farmer

Eastern Iowa farmer Dave Walton says his planting season should get started by the end of the week.

“We had plenty of rain here the last few weeks that’s kept us out. We’re ready to go and I think we’re getting close.”

He tells Brownfield he’s feeling better about his soil conditions as the growing season gets underway.

“We’ve had probably six or seven inches of rain in the last two weeks and it’s all soaked in. The tile lines are running again and so I think we’ve filled up that soil profile for right now.”

Walton says he typically targets an April 20th planting date.

“We’re maybe a couple of days behind, but nothing to be concerned about yet.”

He raises corn, soybeans, and beef cattle near Wilton in Cedar County.
