Planting delays continue in central Missouri
A farmer in central Missouri says he would like a few dry and warm days to finish planting corn.
“I like to have corn planted by May 15 if we possibly can.”
Jay Fischer, who farms in Callaway County, says he didn’t meet that goal this year as persistent rains keep fields wet and muddy.
But Fischer says the corn he planted in early March, before the rains came, is growing nicely.
“Right after we planted, we had 28 degree nights, but it wasn’t emerged yet and it didn’t seem to affect it. We do have quite a bit of drowned out though, due to ponding from three to four inch rains.”
Fischer says there are some farmers in southern Cole, Morgan and Miller Counties who haven’t planted crops as of mid-May, because of the rains.
There is more rain in the forecast for central Missouri this weekend.
