Planting ends for some Missouri farmers as rain returns

Planting wrapped up for some Missouri farmers before the rain resumed earlier this week.
Rance Daniels, who farms in the Missouri Bootheel, says he finished planting on Saturday, and tells Brownfield some of his earlier planted soybeans are coming up.
“The early beans aren’t quite boot top high yet, but I mean, they’re up to a good stand, they’re probably six to eight inches tall. The first post application has been made on my earlier beans, and then we’ve got beans that are just now cracking the ground, just now coming up.”
He says rice looks good and is almost ready to flood, nearly two weeks ahead of normal.
USDA says 89 percent of Missouri’s rice crop is planted, with 70 percent of the crops emerging. Fifty-nine percent of Missouri’s soybeans are planted, with 35 percent of the crop emerging.
Cotton planting is nearly 80 percent complete in Missouri, while corn planting is 84 percent complete, with 60 percent of the crop emerged, in-line with last year.
Daniels says it’s been an extremely dry planting season, and while there has been rain in the past few weeks, it’s not enough and more rain this week would be welcome.
