Planting might not be that far away

An agronomist near the borders of Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri suggests it would not be far-fetched to see planting underway in less than two months.

Tyler Dubay with Stine Seed says many growers will be preparing for spring fieldwork in the coming weeks.

“Making sure you’re aligned with your cooperative on your sprayers and things like that, making sure they’re ready to go. Everybody starts getting antsy around mid to end of March because everyone seems to be planting earlier nowadays.”

Dubay is based near Peoria and tells Brownfield some seed went into the ground last March, but 2023 was even earlier.

“Two years ago we actually had people planting and finishing by the end of March, because a lot of times people are seeing if you plant earlier now you get more bean yield out of everything because you give more time for the soybeans to vegetatively grow and stuff like that.”

He says last year started great but ended hot and dry, causing some seed quality concerns for 2025.
