Planting progress varies in Missouri

An owner of a grain elevator in northeast Missouri says planting progress is all over the board due to the recent rains.

“It’s not late, we’re not worried.”

Sam Sullivan tells Brownfield some farmers are just starting planting of corn and soybeans and others are finished.

“Most everything that went in went in about two weeks ago up to the first of April. It’s been cold, but I haven’t heard much about replanting. Everything has emerged well.”

Sullivan says he’s expecting more planting delays as rains continue throughout the week.

According to USDA, Missouri’s corn planting is 72% complete, a slight increase from the previous week with 54% of the crop emerged. 36% of the soybeans have been planted with 25% of the crop emerged. 87% of Missouri’s rice has been planted, with 73% of the crop emerged. 63% of the state’s cotton has been planted.

USDA says 90% of Missouri’s winter wheat has been headed with conditions rated 82% good to excellent.
