Planting pushes into last half

Michigan farmers are past the halfway mark planting and on alert for wheat stripe rust.

The USDA says corn is 50 percent planted and 20 percent emerged, while 42 percent of soybeans are planted, and 17 percent emerged.

Sugarbeets are 75 percent emerged and rated 93 percent good to excellent. The first cutting of alfalfa began over the last week.

Winter wheat in Michigan is still rated 72 percent good to excellent with 87 percent jointed and 21 percent headed, ahead last year and the five-year average.

Tree fruit is starting to set and regular rains have been good for vegetable development.
