Planting underway where possible

A Michigan farmer says he’s still dealing with the repercussions of a wet harvest season.

Scott Wilson tells Brownfield he couldn’t plant winter wheat last fall, so corn is going into most of those fields.

“Commodity prices have kind of rebounded, so that doesn’t look like a horrible, horrible decision,” he says. “From a rotation standpoint, it’s a mix of corn and soybeans and a few more non-GMO acres.”

Wilson started planting corn last Tuesday because those fields were ready.

“Because of some of the conditions the fields were left in after last fall, it’s a little slower getting ground worked down ahead of the planter,” he shares. “Any fields we worked are really rough because of the lack of frost that didn’t kind of smooth them out over the winter.”

Wilson says even with the slow start he’s ahead of recent years with about 50% of his corn crop and about 25% of his soybeans planted.
