Poppe says B20 mandate on schedule, but could see changes
A Minnesota legislator says the B20 mandate is on schedule but could see some changes ahead of its May first launch.
DFL Representative Jeanne Poppe of Austin tells Brownfield the Legislature is looking to modify aspects of the requirement that calls for an increase in biodiesel blends from 10 to 20 percent.
“the people on the opposite side (of the issue) are concerned about it, so to try and get a little bit more comfort for them (with modifications). But certainly the B20 (mandate) is still on target to get to that point this year.”
The current law generally requires that each gallon of Number 2 diesel fuel sold in Minnesota be 10 percent biodiesel, then doubling to 20 percent at the end of this month.
However, until state agencies certify that certain conditions are met, the mandate reverts to 5 percent from October through March because of perceived cold-weather concerns.
The bill provides that from April 1st to 14th each year, the minimum biodiesel content requirement is temporarily reduced to no less than 10 percent. It also extends the biodiesel mandate exemption for Number 1 diesel indefinitely.
