Pork in cold storage rises above year ago levels
U.S. pork stocks grew in January.
The USDA says the amount of pork in cold storage at the start of February was up 1% on the year at 410.404 million pounds, led by surges in butts and bone-in hams, despite overall production declining during the month.
Beef in cold storage fell 4% from year-to-year to 434.895 million pounds on slower production and solid demand, pulling the red meat total 2% below a year ago to 862.84 million pounds.
Poultry saw a 3% decrease from last year to 1.034 billion pounds, with chicken down 1% to 794.706 million pounds and turkey falling 8% to 237.077 million pounds due to a dip in production and good demand.
The USDA’s updated annual red meat and poultry supply and demand outlook is out March 10th.
