Pork producers helping reduce emissions

Pig farmers continue to implement more sustainable agricultural practices to help improve the environment.

Ben Nuelle, Public Policy Director with the Iowa Pork Producers Association, says one tenet of the “We Care” initiative is protecting natural resources. “We have these on-farm sustainability reports where we have producers across the state that are participating in this so that we can quantify what these emissions are doing, how we are trying to lower them, as well as trying to improve water quality,” Nuelle said.

He tells Brownfield the program has helped reduce carbon emissions. “When you look at comparison impacts from the 2021 growing season, that’s the same as taking 2,700 cars off the road, removing 3,839 tons of soil, and 91 tons of nitrogen saved,” Nuelle said.

Nuelle says over 100 producers are signed up.
