Potash prices remain affordable for farmers despite tariff concerns

The senior farm inputs analyst with Rabobank says potash prices remain relatively cost effective for farmers.

“Relative to the other nutrients, it sits in the affordable camp domestically and globally.”

However, Samuel Taylor says the potential of new tariffs on the country’s largest supplier is worrisome.

“Over the last couple of days, there’s been the threat of 100% tariffs on Canada by President Trump.”  He says, “We rely on Canada as a supplier of potash.  You know, 80-ish, 85% of our potash comes from Canada, so tariffs on Canada would be quite deleterious.”

He tells Brownfield that any additional tariffs on Canadian potash would be a strong reversal of current policy.

“All these nutrients function basically under USMCA, so there’s no tariff and that’s good and we want to keep it that way,” he says.

Taylor says domestic potash prices have edged slightly higher in the last week, not due to the threat of tariffs, but rather due to inventory concerns in Brazil.

Brownfield spoke with Taylor at the 2026 Illinois Soybean Summit.
