Poultry production down in September

U.S. poultry production declined in September.

The USDA says 4.276 billion pounds of poultry were certified wholesome last month, a drop of 5% from a year ago. Chicken production fell 5% to 3.834 billion pounds, canceling out a 2% rise in turkey production to 429.76 million pounds.

Average live weights for all chickens and turkeys were above a year ago, at 6.62 pounds and 31.56 pounds, respectively, while the chicken slaughter decreased 6% to 767.269 million head and the turkey slaughter was slightly lower at 17.143 million head.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 11.703 million head or 0.21% of the preliminary live weight, with post-mortem condemnations at 23.199 million pounds, or 0.54% of monthly production, all below a year ago.

For 2023 to date, U.S. poultry production is 39.416 billion pounds, 2% ahead of the 2022 pace.

The USDA’s next round of annual poultry production projections is out November 9th.
