Poultry production rises during October
The USDA says 4.733 billion pounds of poultry were certified wholesome in October 2023, a rise of 3% from October 2022.
That included 4.22 billion pounds of chicken, 3% higher, and 500.316 million pounds of turkey, up 7%. Chicken and turkey slaughter and total average live weights were above a year ago.
Ante-mortem condemnations were 12.299 million pounds, or 0.2% of the preliminary live weight, while post-mortem condemnations were 25.337 million pounds, 0.53% of monthly production, both 2% below a year ago.
The industry continues to monitor the spread of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza linked to seasonal wild bird migration and its impact on the industry.
The USDA’s updated annual poultry production projection is out December 8th.
