Pre-enrollment opens Wednesday for Illinois cover crop insurance incentive

The bureau chief for land and water resources with the Illinois Department of Agriculture says farmers who planted cover crops have an opportunity to save on their crop insurance premiums.
Michelle Curby says the popular “Fall Covers for Spring Savings” program is returning for a sixth year.
“To promote additional acres of cover crops that are not covered by other state or federal program incentives.” She says, “The program will provide up to a $5 discount on the crop insurance premium the following year, assuming that an insurable crop will be planted in the following spring.”
She tells Brownfield that a total of 190,000 acres worth of funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
“The Illinois Department of Agriculture promotes cover crops.” She says, “It reduces nutrient loss as well as helps retain soil on the farmland. Those benefits are important for improving water quality as well as soil health.”
Curby says pre-enrollment opens December 3rd, while applications can be submitted December 15th through January 15th.
