Precision Conservation Management benefitting farm profitability

The operations manager with Precision Conservation Management (PCM) says data generated by the program is impacting farmer’s profitability.

Clay Bess, who’s based in southeastern Illinois, says tillage practices matter.

“Anything more than a couple passes of tillage does not return on the bottom line for farmers.”  He says, “Our most profitable farmers, the majority of the time, they are using no till systems or a one pass light system.”

He tells Brownfield nitrogen rates also make a difference to the bottom line.

“We consistently find our most profitable corn farmers are applying at an MRTN rate,” he says.

Illinois farmer Brian Krukewitt says being involved in PCM has benefited his farm.

The amount of data that they have, and are able to work with and present, is phenomenal,” he says. “We already do a lot of conservation practices and it kind of gave us some affirmation of what we were doing, and where we need to continue to go, but also gave us some ideas for possible improvements.”

Founded in Illinois in 2016, PCM now serves farmers in Nebraska and Kentucky as well.
