Prepping for spring planting
Missouri farmers are getting ready for spring planting.
“We’re basically playing the waiting game with Mother Nature.”
Terry Schwoeppe from Franklin County says once the ground dries up, he’ll start applying spring fertilizer and scouting weeds, but spring planting won’t start until April.
Jim Boerding from St. Charles County says it will be a few weeks before planting begins.
“These nice days make it hard to not get out in the field. We’re sitting back, getting equipment ready and getting things lined up.”
Boerding tells Brownfield he intends to plant a 50/50 corn and soybean ratio.
“That way, if the markets jump one way or the other, we still have something worth selling.”
Brownfield interviewed Schwoeppe and Boerding at an EPA farmer roundtable.
