Producer prices down in October

The USDA says producers paid more and earned less in October than in September.

The index of prices received fell more than two percent on the month, with a more than six percent decline for crops canceling out a more than three percent increase for livestock.

Producers earned less for apples, market eggs, and strawberries but had higher prices for cattle, lettuce, milk, and broilers.

There was also a decreased movement of cattle, milk, broilers and greenhouse and nursery products but increased marketings for soybeans, corn, cotton, and calves.

The index of prices paid was up a half of percent with higher prices for feeder cattle, feeder pigs, milk cows and nitrogen more than offsetting lower prices for other services, potash and phosphate, mixed fertilizer and supplements.
